Description

Ye, more sky and cloudy backgrounds 'cause I enjoy drawing them the most~ But this time, the Phantump and his Noibat friend are flying above the clouds to some destination, probably at where you're looking at the picture in real life :v

What do you guys think of the background? (Specifically the background, not the characters unless you can tell me how to improve on character shading to fit with the background more (Apart from saying "Don't use cell shading") 'cause I want to be a really good background drawer in the future)

I don't do critiques all too often, but I'm not opposed to doing them and I think I might have a few tips to help with your technique in future drawings~

The first thing I thought when seeing this was "wow, this is absolutely adorable". Seriously, though; your style is normally cute, but aaaaa that Phanthump is absolutely adorable and, while I normally have a soft spot for Noibat, its absolutely positively adorable ;u; Your backgrounds have gotten really pretty and I'm always happy to see your next drawing in my inbox.

Gushing aside, I think a few things could be done better if you ever try this kind of scenery again. I guess I'll start with the characters; the Noibat's lineart seems awfully dark compared to the Phanthump's. I'm not sure if this is actually the case or if they're the same, but the Noibat's colorscheme is just lighter so the lineart appears darker (I'm assuming the second haha) but I think, particularly on its head and right (its right, not my right) wing, the lineart should be a little bit softer. It seems to contrast a lot compared to the Phanthump's lineart, and I really like the feeling that the Phanthump gives to the scenery, so I'd lighten the Noibat's instead of darkening the Phanthump's. You could also try adding some highlights to lighten it up, but I think making the lineart lighter will give the drawing the lightness it needs~ If you do decide to try highlights though, I suggest trying a shade that's relatively close to the base color, as opposed to being really strong next to it; after all, the existing shading isn't overly strong.

As for the background, which is what you seemed to actually want feedback on, the clouds look a bit solid. I'm not entirely sure of the best way to fix this; perhaps you could try blending them like you did with the far away clouds? The ones in the front look a little like the Noibat could just land on them and stand on them xD although they are pretty! I think a blurry effect would make them look a bit softer, but I'm not sure. Experimentation is key, I'd say.

The mountains, despite being really pretty as well, look a bit like a 2d cutout compared to the 3d-ness of the rest of the background. Even though its a bit far away in the distance, perhaps you could try adding some shading to make it appear as though there are ledges and dimensions to them? Make sure the shading isn't too strong around those ledges and cracks though, because its still faded since its so far away in the distance.

The only other thing I have to mention is the sunlight. I've gotten tips from other artists that using a pure white, like in the case of the sunlight, can be a bit strong and take away from the focus of the picture. Since the main focus uses cell shading, which readily uses white, I don't think its a big issue, but it's something to ponder in the future. I still use white for my usual style because its relatively cartoony, but its always a good idea to take other ideas into consideration!

I guess that's all I have to say. I really love the picture, and I hope these tips help!
